Current SEDA Projects
Bulk Water Sales & Export
For nearly a decade, SEDA has been promoting the sale of bulk water for export. There is increased interest in Sitka’s water resource and at least three companies are currently in negotiations for bulk water contracts.
Fish Waste Utilization
In November 2009, SEDA facilitated a meeting of twenty-five stakeholders to discuss the problems and potential solutions for disposal of waste generated by the seafood processing plants and sport fishing. There are several businesses interested in obtaining contracts for processor fish waste and developing a facility for utilizing the waste.
Biomass Energy Project - Japonski Island
Senator Mark Begich visited Sitka in May and showed an interest in this project.
Although this project is still in the early stages of research and development, construction of a biomass energy system on Japonski Island shows great potential. Such as system could provide both heat and electricity to the major facilities on the island using wood waste, cardboard, paper, and other materials. The U.S. Coast Guard, SEARHC, University of Alaska Southeast, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, and Airport could all be tied into a common system.
Sheldon Jackson Core Campus Redevelopment
A variety of old ideas are being discussed once again, but no solid solution has been found for the mostly vacant SJ campus. The University of Dubuque was not able to produce a proposal that was mutually beneficial to Sitka and UD decided to end negotiations. Sheldon Jackson College property is NOT owned or controlled by the City of Sitka.
